About the Role
Fonoa is building a world-class API for all things tax — Lookup, Tax, Returns, Data Sharing, and E-Invoicing — and engineering sits at the centre of the business. You'll join a lean team that's handed customer problems rather than features, co-owns the roadmap with product, and takes architecture, tooling, coding, testing, deployment, operations, and scaling end-to-end. This is a principal-level seat where you're expected to set the technical bar, not follow it.
You'll build REST APIs that finance, tax, ops, and dev teams depend on daily, ship across the stack from backend business logic to customer-facing interfaces, and operate what you build in production. You'll follow products through their full lifecycle — ideation, delivery, support, iteration — which means you'll get the exposure to customer needs that typically only shows up in founder-mode. Fonoa ships fast, continuously, and iteratively, and values innovation and trust over perfect solutions.
What They're Looking For
- You're fluent in a couple of languages across the stack — most of the current codebase is Node.js/TypeScript and Go on the backend with ReactJS on the frontend, though they're not married to any tool
- You're comfortable scaling and operating large-scale microservices in high-growth environments (or eager to learn if you're coming from adjacent territory)
- You have a strong sense of ownership — you don't leave code uncovered by tests, features undelivered, or dead code rotting in production
- You're a builder at heart with an entrepreneurial attitude; you ship fast, continuously, and iteratively, learning at each step
- You use data over opinions to make decisions, and you're comfortable finding the data yourself when it's missing
- You're fully proficient in written and spoken English — Fonoa's team spans the world but works in English
