About the Role

ModelML's AI workspace processes sensitive financial data for some of the world's largest banks, asset managers, and regulated institutions — workloads where SOC 2, GDPR, and FCA expectations are real, not aspirational. Following their $75M Series A in November 2025 — reportedly the largest fintech Series A on record — they're deepening the senior backend bench behind the platform. This role sits at the intersection of AI and finance, working alongside ML engineers, product teams, and infrastructure specialists, reporting directly to the founders.

You'll architect scalable backend services and APIs that power the AI workspace, build data pipelines that process large-scale financial datasets with accuracy and performance, and optimise database schemas and queries for high-throughput, low-latency operations across distributed systems. You'll partner with ML engineers to productionise models inside backend systems, lead technical design reviews, mentor junior and mid-level engineers, and help shape the engineering culture as the platform scales. This is a staff-track IC seat with visible influence, not a layer of a larger team.

What They're Looking For

• You have 7+ years of professional backend engineering experience and a proven track record of building and scaling production systems
• You're expert-level in Python and modern web frameworks — particularly FastAPI — and you've shipped production services, not just touched them
• You've gone deep on PostgreSQL — query optimisation, indexing strategy, performance tuning — and you've scaled databases through real load
• You've run Celery (or equivalent) and message brokers like Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, or Kafka in event-driven architectures at non-trivial throughput
• You design REST APIs and microservices cleanly, you're fluent with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and Docker/Kubernetes, and you debug distributed systems instinctively
• You bring strong security fundamentals — authn/authz, encryption, data handling — and ideally have shipped inside regulated environments (SOC 2, GDPR, FCA)
